Russian museum
The largest museum of Russian art in the world with the collection of 400.000 pieces.
Founded in April 1895 by Nicholas II, the museum is housed in the Mikhailovsky Palace that belonged to Mikhail - the fourth and youngest son of Paul I. The museum's collection shows the development of Russian art from the 11th century to the present.
One of the largest and most representative collections of the Russian Museum is collection of works of medieval art, which has more than 5.000 icons.
There are present all the iconographic schools that existed in medieval Russia, when each major city had its own artistic traditions.
